Is your hot water system an emergency?

Making it safe, then getting hot water back
To shut down an electric storage unit, switch it off at its isolating switch or at the switchboard, then close the cold water isolation valve on the inlet pipe. For a gas unit, turn the gas off at the unit and close the same cold water valve. Keep clear of the drain line, as the water coming out is hot.
In Queensland, installing or replacing a water heater is notifiable work, whether it’s electric, gas, solar or heat pump. The licensed plumber registers it with the QBCC on a Form 4 when the job’s done. Every new or replacement system also needs a temperature control device so water reaches the bathroom at no more than 50°C, while the tank itself stores water at 60°C or more to stop Legionella growing.
