The braided hose under your sink

Most kitchens, bathrooms and laundries in Underwood have at least one flexi hose. It’s a rubber hose wrapped in braided stainless steel that connects the water to a tap, toilet, dishwasher or washing machine. Suncorp says that if you’ve had plumbing work done in the last 20 years, you very likely have one. When one bursts, you need an emergency plumber in Underwood that night, not a booking next week.

Burst flexi hoses caused one in ten of the home water damage claims Suncorp analysed for 2024, from more than 22,000 claims. A Master Plumbers spokesperson puts the flow from a burst hose at more than 20 litres a minute. Suncorp’s assessors say one left running for 24 hours can release enough water to fill a household swimming pool.

In an open-plan home the water doesn’t stay in the kitchen. It runs under cabinets and across floors into the next room. Suncorp also found the damage gets worse over the holiday months, when people are away, and suggests turning the water off at the mains before you leave.

What to look for when you check your hoses

Suncorp inspected thousands of flexi hoses over six months and found about 30 per cent were at risk of bursting, an average of two in every home. The warning signs are fraying or broken wires in the braid, rust or corrosion, kinks or twists, and green or white staining on the hose or its fittings. Checking takes about 10 minutes every six months.

The Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia lists the usual causes: water pressure above what the hose is rated for, cleaning chemicals stored in the cupboard beside it, a hose rubbing on something or bent too tightly, or a hose that’s simply past its replacement date. Its advice is to replace them every five years, or as the manufacturer says. Some last 20 years, others corrode much sooner.

Any new hose should be WaterMark certified. Shops can legally sell hoses without it, but a plumber can’t legally install one. Leak repair of any kind is part of our everyday work, and we can look over the rest of the hoses in the house while we’re there.

Underwood was gazetted in 1975, when it straddled the Brisbane City and Albert Shire boundaries. Today it’s a Logan City area, so a burst main in the street goes to Logan City Council on 07 3412 3412. Anything on the house side of the meter is ours. We hold QBCC plumbing licence 15504687 and gas licence L90908.

A flexi hose just burst in my Underwood home. What do I do first?

If the hose has its own isolating valve (a small tap on the pipe where the hose connects), turn it off. If it doesn’t, or the room is already flooded, turn the water off at the meter rather than walking through the water, and switch the power off at the switchboard. Then call 0418 871 269.

Do I need an emergency plumber in Underwood for a leaking flexi hose?

For a burst one, yes. Water keeps flowing until it’s turned off and the hose is replaced. A hose that’s weeping, rusty or frayed can fail within days or even hours, so turn its valve off and get it replaced straight away.

How often should flexi hoses be replaced?

The Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia says every five years, or as the manufacturer recommends. Check them every six months in between, and make sure replacements are WaterMark certified.

Will my home insurance cover water damage from a burst flexi hose?

Many home and contents policies cover sudden escape of water, but check your own policy. Insurers stress regular checks and replacing hoses on time to avoid the damage in the first place.

Can you come out at night or on a weekend?

Yes. The emergency line is open 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. Routine jobs are booked through the office, 7am to 5pm on weekdays.
