You can smell gas. Do this now

Natural gas and LPG have no smell of their own. A chemical called mercaptan is added so a leak smells like rotten eggs and you notice it. If you smell it, the Queensland Government’s advice is: don’t panic, don’t light anything, and don’t switch any electrical device on or off, as even a light switch can spark.

Turn off the gas appliance and open doors and windows. If you can still smell gas, turn the supply off at the meter or cylinder and call your gas supplier or a licensed gasfitter. If you can still smell it after the supply is off, call 000.

If there’s a fire, an explosion or a leak you can’t control, call 000 straight away and get everyone out. Only turn the gas off at the meter or cylinder if it’s safe to do so.

Natural gas is lighter than air and tends to rise and spread out. LPG is heavier than air and can pool in low spots and drains, so with an LPG leak, check low areas before assuming the smell has cleared.

Who fixes what in a gas emergency

Your gas distributor owns and maintains the pipeline network that delivers the gas, and its emergency number is printed at the top right of your gas bill. Allgas, which runs the natural gas network across Brisbane’s southern suburbs and the Gold Coast, takes gas emergencies on 1800 427 532. If you’re on LPG cylinders, your LPG supplier maintains and tests the cylinders.

Work on the gas system at your home is a different matter: in Queensland only a licensed gasfitter can do it. That covers installing, repairing, servicing and testing pipework, connections and appliances. Always ask to see the gas work licence before anyone starts. Ours is L90908.

Not every gas problem has a smell. Faulty or badly installed gas appliances can produce carbon monoxide. The RACGP lists headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and confusion as signs of mild exposure, often easing when you leave the house and coming back when you return. If several people at home feel unwell like this, turn the appliance off, get fresh air and seek medical help.

As well as gas leaks, we look after gas appliance connections and gas hot water. Plumbing work is carried out under QBCC licence 15504687.

Frequently asked questions

I can smell gas in my Springwood home. Do I need an emergency plumber?

You need a licensed gasfitter, and we’re both. Turn off the appliance, open up the house, and turn off the supply at the meter or cylinder. Then call 0418 871 269. If the smell stays after the supply is off, call 000.

How can I check my gas fittings for a leak?

The Queensland Government suggests spraying soapy water on the meter or cylinder fittings, hoses, regulator and connections with the gas on. Bubbles mean a leak. Turn the gas off and don’t use it until a gasfitter has repaired it.

Should I call the gas company or a gasfitter?

For a leak in the street or at the meter, call your distributor on the emergency number on your bill. For a leak in your pipes or appliances, call a licensed gasfitter. If you’re not sure, call us and we’ll tell you.

My gas cooktop clicks but won’t light. Is that dangerous?

Queensland Government advice is that if the igniter isn’t lighting within a few clicks, or the flame is uneven or sputters, the appliance may be faulty and a gasfitter should check it. Don’t keep trying with the gas running.

Do you handle gas emergencies after hours?

Yes. Gas and plumbing emergency calls are taken 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. Routine bookings go through the office, 7am to 5pm on weekdays.
