Bushfire season and your rainwater tank

Redland City Council’s disaster planning notes that a bushfire around Mount Cotton is likely to affect power, water, wastewater and telecommunications infrastructure as well as homes.

For homes that drink roof-harvested rainwater, Queensland Health’s advice is to disconnect the pipes from the roof to the tank as soon as a bushfire threat appears. That keeps ash, debris and fire retardant out of the tank, and doing it early means it won’t slow you down if you have to leave.

The time to prepare is before the season: Queensland Health suggests a set-up where the roof-to-tank pipes can be disconnected quickly and easily. We offer full rainwater tank services, from choosing a tank to installing it.

After the fire: getting safe water back

If the tank wasn’t disconnected and it has rained since the fire, Queensland Health says ash and other contaminants have probably reached the tank. In most cases it will need draining, cleaning and refilling with water known to be safe to drink. The drained water can still go on the garden.

Before reconnecting the tank, the roof and gutters need a thorough clean with safe water (no pressure washer on an asbestos roof), and any first-flush device should be emptied and checked.

A tank damaged by the fire will likely need draining and repair or replacement. We install replacement rainwater tanks, and diagnose tank and pump faults so water gets back to the house.

Should I disconnect my tank as soon as I see smoke?

Queensland Health advises disconnecting the roof-to-tank pipes as soon as the threat of a bushfire is apparent. That stops windblown ash and debris getting in, and means you’re not doing it in a rush if you have to evacuate.

It rained before I disconnected the tank. Is the water safe?

Probably not for drinking. Queensland Health says ash and contaminants have likely flowed in, and the tank will usually need draining, cleaning and refilling with safe water. For health advice, the Metro South public health unit is on (07) 3176 4000.

Can you help get my tank set up before bushfire season?

Queensland Health recommends that homes in bushfire-prone areas have roof-to-tank pipes that can be disconnected quickly and easily. We offer full rainwater tank services, from choosing a tank to installing it, and diagnose tank and pump faults on Mount Cotton properties.
