Is it your pipe or the council’s?

The first question in a Capalaba plumbing emergency is who it belongs to. In the Redlands, water and sewerage mains are run by City Water, Redland City Council’s water business (it used to be called Redland Water). Your water meter marks the line.

On the council’s side are the meter, its fittings on the street side, and sewer main blockages up to your property’s inspection opening. City Water handles those emergencies 24 hours a day on 3829 8999.

On your side is any leak on the house side of the meter, all the plumbing in your home, and the sewer pipes running from the house to that inspection opening. That’s a job for a licensed plumber.

If you can’t tell which side the problem is on, call us. We’ll tell you straight if it’s one for City Water, so you’re not paying a plumber for the council’s pipe.

What a Capalaba emergency usually looks like

Much of Capalaba was built from the 1970s onward, after Leslie Harrison Dam was finished on Tingalpa Creek in 1968. Many homes are now running on pipework, hot water units and sewer lines that have been in the ground for decades. Old plumbing tends to fail without warning: a pipe that splits under the slab, a cistern that won’t stop running, or a hot water unit that starts leaking from the base.

Tingalpa Creek runs along Capalaba’s boundary with Brisbane, and council flood mapping shows the land along it is prone to creek flooding in heavy rain. That includes Capalaba Regional Park and the sportsfields on Old Cleveland Road. After a big storm, water lying in the yard can hide the real problem, such as a cracked stormwater line or a sewer pipe taking in water. Once things settle, we can run a drain camera through the pipes to find the cause.

Jim Monger Plumbing and Gas holds QBCC licence 15504687 for plumbing and L90908 for gas fitting, and runs from 3 Jordan Dr, Victoria Point.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t see your question? Call us and we’ll talk it through.

Call 0418 871 269
Who do I call if a water main bursts in my street in Capalaba?

City Water (Redland City Council) on 3829 8999. It’s their pipe and they take emergency calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If the water is coming up inside your property boundary, on the house side of the meter, call us.

What should I do first while I wait for the plumber?

Turn off the water at the meter’s stop valve. If it’s a hot water unit leaking, turn off the power or gas to it too. Move anything valuable out of the way and keep people clear of any sewage. Then call 0418 871 269 and tell us what you can see.

Sewage is coming up in my yard. Is that my problem?

It depends where the blockage is. If it’s in the council sewer main, City Water is responsible. If it’s in your pipes before the inspection opening, a plumber needs to clear it. We can find out which and clear your side the same visit.

Do you come out after hours and on weekends?

Yes. Emergency plumbing and gas calls are taken 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. Office hours for routine bookings are 7am–5pm, Monday to Friday.

Can you handle a gas emergency?

If you smell gas, leave the house, don’t use switches or flames, and turn the gas off at the meter or bottle if it’s safe to do so. Then call us. We hold a gas fitting licence (L90908) and can find and repair the leak.
