Sewage coming up? Check the gully outside first
Most homes in Queensland have an overflow relief gully (ORG). It’s a small grated outlet outside, near the kitchen, laundry or bathroom. When a sewer blocks, the grate is meant to pop off so sewage overflows into the yard instead of into the house through a toilet or floor waste.
To do its job, the ORG has to sit at least 150mm below the lowest drain inside and at least 75mm above the ground around it, so rainwater can’t run into it. It stops working if it has been paved over, glued shut, buried under garden beds, or has a downpipe draining into it.

Stop using all water in the house: no flushing, showers or washing machine. Check the ORG outside. If its grate hasn’t lifted, the blockage may be pushing sewage back inside. Keep people and pets clear, then call 0418 871 269.
How do I find my overflow relief gully?
Look outside along the walls near the kitchen, laundry or bathroom for a small round grate, usually with a loose cap. If you can’t find one, or it’s been paved or built over, that’s worth fixing once the emergency is sorted.
Water is pooling in my yard after a king tide or storm. Is that a plumbing emergency?
Surface water on its own usually isn’t. It becomes urgent if water is getting into the sewer, toilets are gurgling or slow, or sewage is coming up. In that case, call us. If a council drain or main in the street is the problem, call City Water on 3829 8999.
