Garden Taps and Irrigation in Springwood
Outdoor taps, garden water lines and irrigation connections for Springwood homes, set up so they water the garden, not the footpath.

Where DIY stops and the plumber starts
Garden watering sits right on the line between jobs you can do yourself and jobs that need a licence. The QBCC lists installing or maintaining an irrigation or lawn watering system as unregulated work, but only downstream of a tap, an isolating valve or a backflow prevention device on the supply pipe for that system.
So clicking together drip line or pop-up sprinklers off an existing garden tap is yours to do. Adding a new garden tap, extending the water supply pipe across the yard, or connecting an irrigation system directly into the mains is regulated plumbing work for a licensed plumber.
Irrigation connected to the mains is also one of the places a backflow prevention device is usually fitted, to stop garden water being drawn back into the drinking supply. If the device is a testable type, it must be registered and tested every year.

Stop the garden wasting water
Outdoor water use adds up fast. Seqwater says a sprinkler can use 900 litres an hour, and a hose whose nozzle pops off can waste 1,000 litres an hour. Turn the hose off at the tap, not just at the trigger.
Seqwater’s advice for irrigation: use a timer, check the system regularly, cut back how often it runs, and consider a moisture sensor so it doesn’t water when it rains. Water before 8am or after 4pm to reduce evaporation, and water the roots, not the leaves.
Logan City Council adds that automatic watering systems should be serviced regularly and checked for leaks. If you have a rainwater tank, Seqwater suggests using it for the garden instead of drinking water.
We install garden taps and outdoor water lines, find and repair underground leaks, and plumb rainwater tanks for garden use, under QBCC licence 15504687.
Frequently asked questions
Can’t see your question? Call us and we’ll talk it through.
Call 0418 871 269Can I install my own irrigation system in Springwood?
Yes, if it runs downstream of a tap, isolating valve or backflow device. The QBCC lists that as unregulated work. Connecting it into the water supply pipe needs a licensed plumber.
Do I need a plumber to add a garden tap?
Yes. Adding a tap or extending the supply pipe is regulated plumbing work.
How much water does a sprinkler use?
Seqwater says around 900 litres an hour, which is why timers and moisture sensors are worth having.
My water bill jumped and the irrigation is on a timer. Could that be it?
It could. A leak in an irrigation line or a valve that won’t close can run unnoticed. Logan City Council recommends servicing automatic watering systems and checking them for leaks.
Does irrigation need a backflow device?
Irrigation connected to the mains is one of the common places a backflow prevention device is fitted. A plumber can check what your system needs.
