Living on bottled gas

Not every property is on a natural gas main. Homes without one can run a cooktop, hot water or heating on LPG cylinders instead. Bottled gas is safe when the system is installed and looked after properly, but it behaves differently from natural gas.

LPG is heavier than air. Queensland’s gas safety regulator notes that while natural gas tends to rise and disperse, LPG can pool in low areas and drains. That matters for where cylinders sit and where a leak would collect.

Like all fuel gas, LPG has no smell of its own. A chemical called mercaptan is added to give it a rotten-egg smell so a leak is easy to notice. Fuel gases aren’t poisonous, but a leak can displace oxygen and cause nausea and dizziness, and the gas is highly flammable.

Cylinders, connections and checks

Connected cylinders are maintained and tested by your LPG distributor. Watch for signs of trouble, such as a gas smell or a damaged cylinder, and phone the distributor if you have concerns. Cylinders should be secured, kept away from heat and ignition sources, and have their valves sealed when not in use.

Smaller portable cylinders, usually 9 kg for barbecues and camping, must carry a valid test stamp to be refilled. They’re stamped every 10 years, and refill stations must check the date and refuse a cylinder that isn’t in test.

A simple leak check: mix detergent and water in a spray bottle, and with the gas on, lightly spray the cylinder fittings, hose, regulator and connections. Bubbles mean a leak. Turn the gas off at the cylinder and don’t use it until it’s repaired.

Installing, altering or repairing the pipework, regulators and appliance connections is gas work, and only a licensed gasfitter can do it. We connect appliances on bottled supply, carry out bottled-gas changeovers, and issue the compliance certificate when an installation is complete. Gas licence L90908, plumbing licence QBCC 15504687.

Who looks after my LPG bottles in Sheldon?

Your LPG distributor maintains and tests connected cylinders. Call them if you smell gas or see damage to a cylinder.

Why won’t the servo refill my BBQ gas bottle?

It may be out of test. Cylinders need a valid 10-year test stamp, and refill stations must check the date before filling.

How do I check my gas bottle for leaks?

With the gas on, spray soapy water on the cylinder fittings, hose, regulator and connections. Bubbles mean a leak: turn the gas off and get it repaired.

Can I connect a new gas appliance to my LPG myself?

No. Connecting an appliance is gas work, and in Queensland only a licensed gasfitter can do it.

Is LPG more dangerous than natural gas?

It behaves differently. LPG is heavier than air and can pool in low areas and drains, so cylinder placement and leak checks matter.
