What the stars on the label mean
Every new tap, showerhead and toilet sold in Australia carries a Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) rating. Each star band covers a range of water use, tested by an accredited laboratory. The more stars, the less water the product uses.

Picking the right rating for each room
More stars isn’t always the right answer. The WELS scheme suggests a 5 or 6 star tap for a bathroom basin, where you only need a trickle to wash your hands, but a 3 or 4 star tap in the kitchen and laundry, so there’s enough flow to fill a pot or a sink.
For showers, 4 or 5 stars gives the best balance of savings and a good shower. A 5 star showerhead can use up to 50% less water than a 3 star one. Bath spouts don’t need a rating, as they have to fill quickly.
Replacing an old single flush toilet with a 4 star dual flush model can cut its water use by more than half. Swapping a toilet is regulated plumbing work, so it needs a licensed plumber.
