Pool Water and Leaks in Thornlands

Plumbing around Thornlands pools: auto top-up valves, rainwater tank top-ups and hunting down the leaks that keep the pool falling and the water bill rising.

Where pool water goes

Every pool loses some water to evaporation, especially in a Queensland summer. Seqwater says a pool blanket can cut evaporation by up to 90%, and a roller makes it easy to put on and take off.

Backwashing the filter sends water down the drain too. Seqwater’s advice is to backwash only when it’s actually needed. Keeping the pool and filter clean means you won’t need to backwash as often.

Beyond that, a pool that keeps dropping may have a leak. Seqwater recommends regular maintenance that includes checking for leaks, and Logan City Council suggests inspecting the pool regularly for cracks and signs of leaks, and not planting large trees nearby, as roots can crack a pool shell.

Auto top-ups and tank water

An automatic top-up valve hides a leak well, because it quietly replaces whatever escapes. Urban Utilities’ leak checklist suggests making sure a pool’s auto top-up isn’t running continuously. If it is, the water is going somewhere, and it’s all being paid for at the meter.

A rainwater tank is a better source for topping up than drinking water, as Seqwater points out. A tank with a pump can be plumbed to fill the pool, and a tank with a mains backup may need a backflow prevention device on the mains connection.

If the top-up valve is sound and the pool still drops, the next step is to find where the water is going: the shell, the fittings, or the pipework between pool and filter. We find underground leaks with electronic leak detection and repair the plumbing side.

We plumb rainwater tanks, repair leaking pipes and fit valves under QBCC licence 15504687. Quotes are free.

How do I stop my Thornlands pool losing so much water?

Use a pool blanket, which Seqwater says cuts evaporation by up to 90%, backwash only when needed, and check for leaks.

My pool auto top-up never seems to stop. What does that mean?

Water is being lost somewhere, or the valve itself is faulty. Urban Utilities suggests checking that the auto top-up isn’t running continuously.

Can I fill my pool from my rainwater tank?

Yes. Seqwater recommends using tank water for topping up the pool instead of drinking water. We can plumb the tank to the pool.

Can trees damage my pool?

Logan City Council advises against planting large trees near a pool, as roots can cause cracks and leaks.

Can you find a leak in the pool pipework?

Yes. Electronic leak detection finds leaks in underground pipework so only the necessary spot is opened.
