How Straddie’s drought levels work

Point Lookout draws its water from the aquifer under North Stradbroke Island, through local bores and a Seqwater treatment plant. Seqwater’s licence allows up to 750 megalitres a year to be taken for Point Lookout’s town supply, and it can’t take more than that in any year.

Because the town isn’t on the SEQ Water Grid, its drought plan is local too. Seqwater watches groundwater levels in observation bores and moves through set levels: normal operations, then drought readiness, then drought response, when council encourages voluntary water saving, and then moderate to severe drought.

At that last level, the plan calls for medium to high level water restrictions, with households encouraged to use 140 to 120 litres per person per day, and water carted between the island’s communities if needed.

Cutting use before you’re asked to

The easiest savings are in the fittings. A 5 star WELS showerhead runs at somewhere between 4.5 and 6 litres a minute, against up to 9 for a basic 3 star model, and the national scheme estimates older fittings use as much as half again more than a modern 4 or 5 star one.

Toilets come next. A single flush cistern from decades past can send 9 litres or more down with every flush, and a modern 4.5/3 litre dual flush unit can cut that by more than half.

Leaks matter most of all in an empty holiday house, where nobody hears a cistern running or sees a dripping tap for weeks. Fixing them stops water being lost from a local supply as well as from your bill.

Water-saving showerheads, taps and toilets, plus leak repairs, are all part of our work on the island, under QBCC licence 15504687.

Can Point Lookout have water restrictions when Brisbane doesn’t?

Yes. It runs on North Stradbroke Island’s own groundwater, with a local drought response plan and its own trigger levels.

How much water should we use per person during restrictions?

At the moderate to severe drought level, the plan encourages 140 to 120 litres per person per day.

What’s the quickest way to cut water use in a Point Lookout house?

Fix leaks, and swap old showerheads and single flush toilets for 4 or 5 star models.

Will a low-flow showerhead give a poor shower?

Not if it’s a rated one. Under WELS, showerheads rated 4 or 5 stars have to pass additional tests on how well they cover you and the force of the spray.

Can you fit water-saving fittings in a holiday rental?

Yes, including showerheads, taps and dual flush toilets, for short-stay and permanent homes alike.
