Is a heat pump worth it?
A heat pump works like a fridge in reverse. It pulls heat out of the surrounding air and moves it into the water, rather than heating the water directly with an element. The Your Home guide puts their efficiency at a coefficient of performance of around 3 to 5, meaning three to five units of heat for every unit of electricity, which is far better than a standard electric tank.
They cost more to buy than an electric storage system, but use much less energy to run. Energex notes they work better in our warmer climate, where there’s more heat in the air to draw from. Many come with a boost element for cold snaps or heavy use, which costs more to run if it cuts in often.
Federal support comes through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), administered by the Clean Energy Regulator. The STC discount is often built into the advertised installed price, so check whether a quote already includes it. The scheme is being phased out by the end of 2030.
Where it goes matters
A heat pump has a fan and a compressor. Energex says it can make about as much noise as a medium-sized air conditioner. On an integrated unit, where the heat pump sits on top of the tank, Your Home points out that the noisy part is up high, so the sound carries over fences and towards neighbours’ windows.
A split system puts the compressor and fan in a separate low outdoor unit, which helps with noise, and the tank can even go inside. The two parts can usually be 10 to 15 metres apart. On a tight Cleveland block, that can be the difference between a unit that suits the spot and one that annoys next door.
Refrigerant is worth asking about. R290 and R744 (CO2) have low global warming potential, while R134A and R513A rate 1430 and 629, so leaks or poor disposal of those can cancel out much of the benefit.
