Blocked Drain Alexandra Hills

The wipes that say "flushable"
A lot of the blocked toilets and sewer lines we clear start with something that should have gone in the bin. Wet wipes are the worst offender. Urban Utilities, which runs Brisbane’s sewers, has said that many wipes don’t break down like toilet paper after they’re flushed, and they cause costly blockages in private plumbing as well as in the public network.
The packaging doesn’t settle it. Unitywater’s advice is to bin all wet wipes, even ones labelled "flushable". Urban Utilities removes around 120 tonnes of wipes from its network every year. Standards Australia has worked with water utilities and manufacturers on a national standard for what can carry a "flushable" label, but the advice from utilities is still to flush only the three Ps: pee, poo and paper.
Logan City Council warns that wet wipes, tissues and paper towels can all create blockages and fatbergs in sewers. In a house drain, it doesn’t take much for a toilet to stop flushing.

What goes in the bin, and what we do when it hasn’t
Keep these out of the toilet: wet wipes of any kind, sanitary products, cotton buds, condoms, paper towel, tissues and medications. Redland City Council lists foreign objects, including wet wipes, among the things not suitable for its wastewater system, and owners can be charged if a blockage or overflow is caused by inappropriate items going down the drain.
When a toilet or sewer line blocks, we clear it with a high-pressure jet rodder or an electric eel, then run a CCTV camera through the line. The camera shows whether it was a one-off blockage or something that will keep catching debris, like a root, a displaced joint or a sag.
If it was wipes, the fix is simple: clear the line and change what goes down it. If the camera shows damage, you’ll see the footage and get a clear quote before anything else is done.
We work under QBCC licence 15504687 and take emergency blocked drain calls 24/7, including weekends.
Frequently asked questions
Can’t see your question? Call us and we’ll talk it through.
Call 0418 871 269Can I flush "flushable" wipes?
Water utilities say no. Unitywater advises binning all wet wipes, even those labelled flushable, and Urban Utilities says many wipes don’t break down like toilet paper. Flush only pee, poo and paper.
My toilet is blocked in Alexandra Hills. What should I do first?
Stop flushing. If the water is rising, turn off the toilet’s isolation tap behind the pan. If other drains are also slow or gurgling, the blockage may be further down the sewer line. Call 0418 871 269.
Can wipes block the drain even if they flushed fine?
Yes. They can travel some distance before catching on a joint, a root or a build-up of fat, so the blockage may show up days later and further down the line.
Will council pay if my blocked drain was caused by wipes?
Generally not. Redland City Council says owners are responsible for the pipes on their property, and can be charged if a blockage is caused by inappropriate items going into the wastewater system.
Do you check the drain after clearing it?
Yes. A CCTV camera inspection shows what caused the blockage and whether the pipe is damaged, so you’re not paying for the same callout again.
