When roots get into the drain

Tree roots go looking for water, and a drain with a crack or a loose joint is an easy find. Unitywater describes how roots get into cracked pipes and cause major blockages and damage. Once inside, a root keeps growing, catching paper and grease until the line slows and eventually stops.

The early signs are easy to miss: a toilet that gurgles, a shower that drains slower each month, or a gully outside that overflows after heavy use. If clearing the drain only fixes it for a few months, roots are a likely cause.

In the Redlands, roots in your drains are your problem, not council’s. Redland City Council says property owners are responsible for maintaining the plumbing on their property, including preventing tree root intrusion, and for the wastewater pipes up to the inspection opening.

Cutting the roots out, then finding where they got in

We clear root-blocked lines with a high-pressure jet rodder or an electric eel, which clears the roots out of the line. Clearing alone treats the symptom, though. The roots came in through a gap, and they’ll grow back through the same one.

That’s why we follow up with a CCTV camera. It shows exactly where the roots are entering, whether the joint has shifted, and if the pipe is cracked. You see the footage and can decide between regular maintenance clearing or a repair at that point.

Prevention starts in the garden. Unitywater recommends planting trees at least 1.5 metres from pipes and choosing species suited to areas near drains. If you’re planting, ask us where your sewer and stormwater lines run first.

We work under QBCC licence 15504687, and our pre-purchase inspections use the same camera to check sewer and stormwater lines before you buy.

How do I know if tree roots are blocking my drain?

Common signs are slow drains, gurgling toilets, an overflowing gully, or a blockage that keeps coming back a few months after clearing. A CCTV camera inspection confirms it.

Who pays for root damage in my sewer pipe in Capalaba?

Redland City Council says owners are responsible for maintaining property plumbing, including preventing tree root intrusion, and for wastewater pipes up to the inspection opening. Beyond that point, it’s council’s main.

Will clearing the roots fix the problem for good?

Not on its own. Roots grow back through the same gap. The camera shows where they’re getting in, so you can choose ongoing clearing or a repair at that spot.

How far should trees be from my drains?

Unitywater recommends at least 1.5 metres from pipes, and choosing species suitable for planting near drains.

Can roots get into stormwater pipes too?

Yes. Any pipe with a crack or loose joint can let roots in. We clear and inspect stormwater lines as well as sewer lines.
