The sewer main in your backyard

Some Logan homes have a council sewer main running through the backyard, with a round or square maintenance hole lid somewhere along it. That pipe and that maintenance hole belong to Logan City Council, even though they’re on your land. Your house drain is the pipework that runs from your toilets, sinks and showers to the point where it joins the main.

If a blockage is in your pipes, Logan Water’s advice is to call a licensed plumber first. If a council main or maintenance hole is overflowing or damaged, report it to council on 07 3412 3412. When it isn’t clear which, a camera inspection from your side settles it.

Council can get to its assets when it needs to. Under the Local Government Act 2009, council and its contractors are authorised to enter private property to maintain existing council assets, with written notice in advance.

When Logan Water works on the sewer near you

Logan runs a Wastewater Pipeline and Maintenance Hole Renewal Program to extend the life of older sewer infrastructure. Crews carry out CCTV inspections of pipes and maintenance holes, including on private property, then reline pipes, repair maintenance holes and replace lids.

If you’ve built a garden bed or structure over a maintenance hole, council says it is authorised to remove it to maintain the asset, and will contact you first to discuss options. Keeping the lid clear saves that conversation.

During works there’s a small risk of back pressure pushing up through household toilets. Council recommends closing all toilet lids and putting something heavy on them, and limiting use of toilets, baths, showers and washing machines while crews are working in your area. If anything does come up, or drains are slow afterwards, we can check your side of the connection.

We clear house drains with a jet rodder or electric eel and inspect them with a CCTV camera, under QBCC licence 15504687. Blocked drain emergencies are taken 24/7.

There’s a council maintenance hole in my Slacks Creek yard. Can I build over it?

Not without checking. Logan says you may need approval to build close to an existing sewer, under the Queensland Development Code, and council can remove garden beds or structures over a maintenance hole to reach it.

Who fixes a blocked sewer in my yard?

If the blockage is in your house drain, a licensed plumber. If the council main or maintenance hole is blocked or overflowing, call Logan City Council on 07 3412 3412.

Can council come onto my property without asking?

Council and its contractors are authorised to enter to maintain council assets under the Local Government Act 2009. For renewal works, residents get advance written notice, and contractors carry identification you can ask to see.

Why should I put weights on my toilet lids during sewer works?

Council says there’s a small risk of back pressure in household toilets while crews work on the main. Weighting the lids and using less water reduces the chance of a mess.

How do I know if the blockage is mine or council’s?

A CCTV camera inspection of your drain shows where the blockage is. If it’s in council’s main, report it. If it’s in your line, we clear it.
