A simple leak check around the house
Start at the meter. Urban Utilities’ test: turn off all taps inside and out, write down the numbers on the meter, use no water for at least an hour, then read it again. If the numbers or the red dials have moved, water is going somewhere. Don’t turn the meter valve during the test.
Then walk through the house. Look for drips at taps and sinks, water under the dishwasher, and swollen or stained cupboards. Put a few drops of food colouring in the toilet cistern: if colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the cistern is leaking. Check the washing machine hoses for cracks, fraying or bulges.
Outside, look for wet patches, unusually green grass or cracked pavers, which can mean an underground leak, and check the meter, solar hot water, pool top-up and any tank top-up valve.
