Your pipes, or Urban Utilities’?

In Manly West, as across Brisbane, water and sewerage are run by Urban Utilities. The water meter is the dividing line. Urban Utilities owns the meter and all the pipes leading away from your property. You own everything on your side: the pipes, fittings, mains-connected water tanks and plumbing, up to the meter and the sewer connection point.

That connection point isn’t always inside your fence. Urban Utilities notes it may be on the council footpath or on common property, and the pipes up to it are still the owner’s responsibility. If a leak or blockage turns up there, it’s a job for your plumber.

Stormwater is different again. Urban Utilities points out that the local council, Brisbane City Council, is responsible for the stormwater network beyond your property boundary. Inside the boundary, gutters, downpipes and stormwater pipes are yours.

Who to call, and when

If water is leaking from the meter itself or from pipes on the street side of it, report it to Urban Utilities’ faults and emergencies line on 13 23 64. It’s their pipe and their cost. The same goes if they’ve worked on your meter in the last four months and a leak appears on your side that their work could reasonably have caused. Urban Utilities asks you to contact them, not a private plumber, so they can investigate.

For anything else on your side, call a licensed plumber. Urban Utilities’ advice is to get leaks fixed as soon as possible, as the owner pays for all water recorded on the meter, leaks included.

We find and repair leaks, including with electronic leak detection before anything is cut open, clear blocked drains with a camera inspection afterwards, and repair taps, toilets, hot water and gas appliances. Quotes are free and given before work starts.

We hold QBCC licence 15504687 and gas licence L90908, and take emergency calls 24/7.

Who is responsible for a water leak at my Manly West home?

If it’s on your side of the water meter, you are, and a licensed plumber should fix it. If it’s the meter or the pipes leading away from your property, call Urban Utilities on 13 23 64.

Where is my sewer connection point?

It’s where your property’s sewer pipe joins Urban Utilities’ network. It can be inside your yard, on the footpath, or on common property. Pipes up to that point are the owner’s.

Urban Utilities just changed my meter and now there’s a leak. Who pays?

If the leak is on your side and could reasonably have been caused by their meter work within the last four months, Urban Utilities says it will fix it. Contact them first, not a private plumber.

Who fixes a blocked stormwater drain in the street?

Brisbane City Council looks after the stormwater network beyond your boundary. Gutters, downpipes and stormwater pipes on your property are yours to maintain.

Do you charge to quote?

No. Quotes are free and given before work begins.
